Lexington County South Carolina Hite Family

Michael Heyd/Hyde (died 1803), of German origin, settled along the Saluda River in present-day Lexington County South Carolina by 1774.  His wife’s name is unknown, but they had six children, born in the 1760s and 1770s.  Some male-line descendants spell their surname as Hyde, but most spell it as Hite. Because of the fact that one of Jost Hite’s sons (Jacob Hite, 1719-1776) moved to South Carolina a few years before his death, many have assumed that this family descends from him.  It is not true, however – the only one of Jacob’s sons to accompany him to South Carolina died young without having married and DNA has proven that Michael’s descendants were not related to the family of Jost Hite.  They lived in an area populated heavily by Germans, many of whom came directly to South Carolina from Europe, arriving in the city of Charleston.
